In July of 2013, Matt left a voicemail for Rachel asking her to dinner at Fish Bar “because she likes fresh seafood” and to see Before Midnight “because she loves to travel.” Perhaps it was the thoughtful details of the date or the curious audacity of a voicemail that led Rachel to agree to a date with a guy she wasn’t particularly interested in, but whatever it was, they’re both grateful.
As the two parted ways after a nightcap at L&L Tavern, Rachel was intrigued but unsure it would go anywhere. Matt was smitten and determined. Since that July 9th date there hasn’t been a day in which the two have not spoken to each other. They grew so close that Rachel braved the big Meehan family Christmas party.
Their first trip together was to visit Rachel’s hometown/borough Queens. It was Spring in New York and they spent the first half of the visit celebrating Rachel’s birthday with friends, walking the streets all day, and staying out all night.
Matt then got to experience his first Passover dinner. Rachel’s mom and stepfather, Gail and Doug, were especially gracious hosts in their warm, quiet home on a hill north of the city. Seeing these two In many ways it was this trip that sealed it for the couple—Matt certainly knew she was the one for him.
Over the years, the couple have traveled frequently, exploring cities near and far. They moved in together and eventually bought a condo together. They even got through painting said condo together. They support and take pride in one another’s passions and careers, adopted a dog, cook together and, I gotta tell ya, they really love it.
It was in Rachel’s parents’ home this past Fourth of July that Matt (finally) proposed to Rachel. Gail and Doug were moving down to Austin the next month and this was to be her last time in this house that became a home. We went up to her old room on the third floor and looked through old photo boxes, CD cases, and artwork, Matt hearing stories about her life, her family, her passions and her homes. He let her know that he would always feel he was home when he was with her and then got down on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage.
Rise and Shine! We are mixing it up and hosting a brunch wedding!
Ceremony to be followed by brunch and dancing

A modest welcome party at Matt's company headquarters. This building has some old Chicago industry to it, but it's been transformed into a handsome event space with a great backyard.
We'll provide food and drink in the way of pizza, beer, wine, pop and water. There will be a couple bocce courts set up and there will be bocce guides on hand to engage and organize the game play. I'm sure we'll have some lesser games available, too: foosball, bags, Jenga, etc. If the weather is nice, then we'll be out in it. It's all just a casual hang and excuse to be together.
Please RSVP by May 1st. The party starts at 7 and we're getting outta there at 10PM sharp. Parking is easy enough if you're thinking of driving—there's a small lot and the street parking is ample and free.
(If you cannot attend we will see you on Saturday morning, bright and early)
We are taking the party to Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club in Wicker Park/Bucktown for some games, drinks and good times. Royal Palms is situated a literal stone's throw from the 606 Trail and a stroll from more bars and restaurants. Bold print announcement: Royal Palms is a 21 and older (no little ones either) only establishment.
We will have a couple courts and cabanas reserved for us around about 5:30, but feel free to show up before then to get a lay of the land, check out their rooftop Lido Deck, play some oversized Connect Four & Jenga, get a photobooth session in, warmup on a shuffleboard court, or simply enjoy the scene with a refreshment.
Rachel and Matt will open a tab at the bar and Royal Palms will slap a wristband on ya so the bar situation will be easy breezy. That tab will close at some point, but the bar will stay open. If you need a bite, there is always a food truck docked at Royal Palms and Small Cheval's famous burgers and fries are just a couple doors down.
We hope you can keep the good times going with us. RSVP here please and thank you.
